Micro expressions & nonverbal communication

Notice the moment beneath the moment.

Micro expressions are brief facial movements associated with emotion. Learning to recognise them can improve observation — but recognising emotion is not the same as proving deception.

The foundation

What is a micro expression?

A micro expression is a very brief facial expression that may occur when an emotion emerges quickly or is being managed.

Because it can be fleeting, the expression is easily missed by an untrained observer. MES training introduces participants to facial movement, macro and micro expressions, congruence, listening and the broader body-language context in which a cue appears.

A person may show fear because they have done something wrong — or because they are anxious about being disbelieved. The expression reveals neither cause nor guilt. Context, baseline and careful questioning remain essential.

The MES foundation material introduces the commonly studied facial expressions associated with seven broad emotion categories.
